Description

Description: Guatemala Capital City offers many interesting and cultural activities to do and see, as well as the opportunity to learn about the history of the city. ‘Guate’, as it is known by the locals, is also home to many museums on a whole range of subjects from the Natural Musuem of Modern Art to the Guatemala City Railway Museum. As well as the beautiful Jardin Botanicowhich contains many local plants and flowers as well as some exotic specimens. Furthermore there are a lot of art galleries located throughout the city, exhibiting the art of local and national artists. Founded in 1777, it is the fourth city in Guatemalan history. We will visit the National Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography which houses many cultural treasures and a collection of important Mayan archaeological artefacts. The museum provides a huge amount of insight with regards to the country’s Maya and archaeological history. Here you can also behold some of the most exquisite pieces of all the archeological sites of the Petén area. We will then go on to visit the Civic Centre. The Civic Center is a set of buildings constructed between the 50’s and 60’s and includes: The Supreme Court of Justice, The Ministry of Public Finance, City Hall, The Social Security, The Bank of Guatemala, The National Mortgage Bank and the Guatemalan Tourism Commission. The Bank of Guatemala houses a library and its exterior is decorated with mural relief by Dagoberto Vasquez, describing the history of the country. Both City Hall and Social Security buildings are decorated with a mosaic by Carlos Merida. We continue downtown to see the beautiful Palacio Nacional de la Cultura. The architectural style is a mix between colonial architecture influenced by Spanish baroque and Spanish renaissance, also referred to as Hispano-Guatemalan Renaissance. The building is known for its green color resembling an avocado. From here you also see the cathedral and the main plaza. We will drive through Avenida de la Reforma, Centro Cívico y Centro Histórico.
