Description

Description:

San Miguel Totonicapán near Quetzaltenango is unknown to most of the visitors to Guatemala . This tour considered as community tourism (because the benefits go nearly exclusively to the local people who are involved in a very active way )  can be done in half a day or a full day adding a few visits more (if interested , please ask )

On arrival in Toto (as commonly known ) in front of the catholic church a local guide will explain a bit about the town while driving through , until arriving at one of the 48 “ cantones “  . We will walk for about 30 minutes up to a small hill to “ SIETE VENTANAS “ (seven windows)  where a Mayan priest is waiting for us , to celebrate one of the days of the Mayan calendar . He will explain from beginning to end how a mayan ceremony is celebrated what takes about 45 minutes . After this cultural experience we visit a local CERAMIC workshop and go on .. for a nice climb (45 minutes one way)  to a viewpoint  called “ EL MIRADOR DE SAN MIGUEL “  overlooking the whole area including the volcanoes from TAJUMULCO to the LAKE ATITLAN .

We are finishing the half day itinerary with a meal in a local family , please advise if you are vegetarian or not !

If choosing for a full day itinerary , we will add a textile workshop and a walk through TOTONICAPAN with a local indigenous family  . (market day on Tuesday and Saturday)
