COMMUNITY TOURISM IN SAN JUAN LA LAGUNA

san juan la laguna

Learn about the customs and traditions in a very rural and authentic Tzutujil village, one of the less visited on the Lake Atitlan. We start the day with a boat trip from Panajachel to San Juan with a visit to a textile cooperative. Discover how a women's weaving cooperative continues the traditional methods of dying thread with native plants. Observe the process of extracting natural dyes used to create extraordinary textile products. Learn about the elaborate work of weaving using recycled materials to create styles unique to San Juan. Watch textiles being woven using traditional back-strap and foot looms. Afterwards, we continue walking through the town as we enjoy the paintings on the walls of the houses (open sky museum) arriving at the garden with medicinal plants . Sustainable usage of natural resources is a cultural ethos of San Juan. An association of midwives and health educators has preserved ancient methods used for generations in the production of plant-based products. Learn how plant essences used for making creams, soaps, shampoos, teas, and other products with healing and comforting properties. If you wish to know more about your personal energy, the elders will discuss the sacred plants that balance your Mayan "nawal" or sign. Lunch with a local family.

After lunch, we take a maize tour.  Walk through the "milpas" or cornfields to learn about the Mayan Cosmovision and why the Maya consider corn a sacred part of their culture.
