BEYOND IDENTITY? Analytic Crosscurrents in Contemporary Mayanist Social Science

The rise and fall of conceptual frameworks in the social sciences is a phenomenon that becomes more apparent the longer one works in the academy. Considered by some a kind of fashion show, the prominence and subsequent decline of certain concepts derives much more from their ability, sharp or blunt as the case may be, to describe and repre- sent social realities. The use of particular analytic concepts and frame- works in the social sciences is also inextricably bound up with larger historical events and moments. In the twentieth century, for example, social scientific frameworks cannot be separated from the upheavals of technological innovation, from the history of labor conflicts, from the struggle against fascism and the Cold War that followed, or from the rising tide of civil and human rights movements in the last half of that century.

This article presents a critical rethinking of constructivist and essentialist approaches to identity formation and maintenance. TEPEHUAS DE HUEHUETLA COSTUMBRES Y TRADICIONES

El ―Costumbre‖ es la tradición de revivir la herencia ritual y ceremonial de los antepasados tepehuas, que celebraban rituales agrícolas y curativos y compartían la organización comunitaria, que reforzaba la hermandad cultural y los vínculos mutualistas y de reciprocidad, que fortalecían la Identidad Indígena, utilizaban con orgullo y honor su indumentaria artesanal con diferentes técnicas de bordado, su lengua materna y sus Costumbres y Tradiciones, como escudos de defensa para asegurar sus rasgos culturales. Los antepasados tepehuas entendían como una obligación moral, hacer la transmisión de manera oral de su Historia, la Preservación y Difusión de su Acervo Cultural, como un cumulo de una sabiduría expresada de manera particular y colectiva que denotaba una Cosmovisión profunda y única en el municipio tepehua de Huehuetla Hidalgo. Francisco ―Chico‖ Arista Martínez, decía: Ju quinchivinti yuch ju lhimakalhkama´. Chai jantu iclhimaxanan. ―Mi idioma es el tepehua, y no me avergüenzo de eso. María Petra Crescencio Santiago, dice: Ju chavai jantuch va juchi ju lhilavan ju na lhitapalai. Vachuch ju quinchivinti’an ju lhimakalhkama´tapalai. Ahora no nada más el español es valioso, también nuestra lengua tepehua vale y María Ana Apolonio Gregorio ―Doña Anita‖, dice: Ju quit’in icmakalhkama´. Chai jantu iclhimaxanan ju quinchivinti. THE BIRTH OF THE CLINIC

This book is about space, about language, and about death; it is about the act of seeing, the gaze. Towards the middle of the eighteenth century, Pomme treated and cured a hysteric by making her take ‘baths, ten or twelve hours a day, for ten whole months’. At the end of this treatment for the desiccation of the nervous system and the heat that sustained it, Pomme saw ‘membranous tissues like pieces of damp parchment …peel away with some slight discomfort, and these were passed daily with the urine; the right ureter also peeled away and came out whole in the same way’. The same thing occurred with the intestines, which at another stage, ‘peeled off their internal tunics, which we saw emerge from the rectum. The oesophagus, the arterial trachea, and the tongue also peeled in due course; and the patient had rejected different pieces either by vomiting or by expectoration’

Constructing Maya Communities

Escribir un libro no es un acto fortuito. No. Además de
las condiciones intelectuales que precisa el autor para crear su obra —que de por sí es condición psicobiológica— se necesita de un largo y profundo estudio sobre el asunto. Un libro no se improvisa. Con ello quiero decir que mi interés por el culto al maíz en Guatemala no es reciente. Data de muchos años atrás, de una época en que lo indígena era material humano desconocido, explorado tan sólo por unos pocos intelectuales y artistas; que a grosso modo podemos situar hasta el gobierno de Ubico. Con la Revolución de octubre de 1944 y el gobierno de Arévalo se inició la exploración del mundo indígena con la fundación del Instituto Indigenista Nacional en 1945. Son prueba de mis afanes por el conocimiento y superación del indígena, varios trabajos publicados al respecto y que, como considero natural, no son conocidos, salvo quizáporunospocos especializados
en el asunto.

El problema de la escritura prehispánica K’iche’ vista a través de las referencias y evidencias documentales coloniales

El problema de la presencia de escritura en las Tierras Altas Mayas de Guatemala ha recibido solo atención ocasional de parte de los investigadores en esa zona. La desaparición de los sistemas de escritura autóctonos en Guatemala, reemplazados rápidamente por la escritura latina adaptada a los idiomas indígenas, causa mayores dificultades para su conocimiento. Solo a través de la recolección de evidencias gráficas y referencias documentales en textos coloniales es que podemos acercarnos al antiguo sistema de escritura de tradición indígena de las Tierras Altas de Guatemala.
