 This tour is perfect for birdwatchers with profound knowledge of birds. You will be picked up from the hotel and from there we will head to the natural reserve early to begin with our counting. You will be given a list of species in this area and of the migrating birds of the current season. The observed species during this tour will be added to the international online platform called EBird so that your counting can help actualizing the data about birds on a worldwide scale.

Birdwatching & Yaxha

During this tour you can spot a variety of birds at Yaxha, one of the major Mayan archeological sites in northern Petén. Yaxha possesses an immense variety of birds due to its proximity to aquifers such as lagoons Yaxha and Sacnab. From your hotel you will travel with the guide to Yaxha where the tour will start. During the tour you will visit hidden archeological places and take natural trails to observe the different bird species you can take photos off. Mountain La Peña Blanca

Peña Blanca is a mountain with an altitude of more than 3000 meters. It belongs to the mountain range of Los Cuchumatanes and is located near the border with Mexico, in the municipality La Libertad, in the department of Huehuetenango.

The most interesting is its panoramic view due to its high altitude, its natural landscape formed by abundant vegetation and mainly to the karst formations of interesting forms that you will see during this tour.

The best time to go on this hike is during the summer season since during winter the accesses, which are tertiary, are considered dangerous and cloudy weather does not allow a good view on the landscape.

Paleontology and Rock Art

The settlement of the American continent, specifically in Guatemala, has been the subject of various studies and theories that have been debated so far.

In this tour you will have the opportunity to visit four sites that present evidence of the prehistory of the Pleistocene (about ten thousand years old) of the area of ​​Huehuetenango.

We will start with the paleontological site "El Mamut" where they carried out excavations and where the remains of mega fauna and a projectile point "type Clovis" were found. Then we will visit three areas with rock paintings that present unique pictograms that will leave the interpretation to your imagination.

Let’s travel together to the time of the first hunter-gatherers who populated these places and left us evidence of their foot print on the American continent.

You can combine this tour with tours to the Mayan ruins of Zaculeu, Chiantla Viejo, and to Cenotes de Candelaria.

6:30 am In Huehuetenango we will start the day with breakfast.

7:30 am We will visit the paleontological site “El Mamut” where you can see fossils of mega fauna. There is also a small museum that we will visit.

8:00 am Transportation to the rock paintings “El Encanto”.

11:00 am Tour of the rock paintings “El Encanto”. You will be impressed by the big number of pictograms that cover the 9 by 5 meters rock.

12:00 pm Transportation to the rock paintings of “La Peña Colorada” in Nentón.  

12:30 pm Tour of the rock art site “La Peña Colorada”.

13:00 pm Transportation to the site “Vieja Catarina”.

13:30 pm Tour of the rock paintings “Vieja Catarina”. The site is located in a protected area.

Pacaya Volcano

Pacaya is by far the most popular volcano to climb in Guatemala, and not without good reason.

The volcano is easy to climb and gives the opportunity to climb an active volcano. On clear days you can see the volcanos Agua, Fuego and Acatenango. If you arrive at the top of the Pacaya you can smell the sulfur, feel the heat and you have a good chance to actually see lava.

The lagoon called “ Brava “ or  “ Yonalbaj “  is the second largest body lake in Guatemala after Lake Atitlan with 3.8km2 and a length of 8km located at 1142 meter above sea level and surrounded by small mountains with abundant vegetation. It is near the border with Mexico in the municipality of Nenton, Huehuetenango.in the western Highlands of Guatemala.  It has karstic origin, forming a natural reservoir through geological faults, is part of a series of lakes, lagoons and cenotes. It is a wonderful place between the fog and warm weather, filled out by rivers that runs down from the Sierra de los Cuchumatanes.

The Cimarron hole is another interesting geological fault. The diameter of the hole is 557.6 ft. A perimeter of 1754 ft. And height of 492 ft. With a lot of vegetation on the bottom of the cylinder.

Day 1

4.00 Departure from Quetzaltenango or 6.00 from Huehuetenango and breakfast on the way in a local restaurant.

9.00 Arrival at the entrance of the road leading to the “CIMARRON hole “, and walk for about one hour to the hole before getting there. (Easy climb). We will arrive at about 10 am at the “Cimarron hole.

11.00 Walk down again and lunch in local restaurant in the nearby village.

13.00 After lunch continue the journey to Laguna Brava for about two hour drive.

14.00 We are going to walk for 45 minutes to get Laguna Brava and set up the base camp.  Free time to enjoy and explore the area.

6.00 Wake up and time to pack all the stuff and have breakfast.

7.00 boat throughout the lagoon to enjoy the waterfall with a relaxing bath.

12.30 transportation back to Huehuetenango and lunch on the way.

Enjoy a spectacular location on the grassy plateau atop the rugged Cuchumatanes from where you can embark on horseback rides. As short as one hour to as long as several days throughout the sprawling countryside.

On this multiple day tour we head towards the Sierra at 3,100 meters high and , three hours from Quetzaltenango and only one hour from Huehuetenango .

Ixil Triangle

A two-day tour in the region of Huehuetenango that really is not to miss.

Day 1: This tour leaves from Huehuetenango to the department of Quiche, through Aguacatán and doing a tour in the village. We then continue to Sacapulas, where we will visit the market to observe the development of Sal Negra (black salt), a tradition of the town. Next we head Nebaj, where we will enjoy a tour of the ceremonial points of the village. We stay overnight at Villa Nebaj.

Day 2: On this day, our first destination will be Chajul, a town with a great Mayan essence. We visit the homes of local women artisans and you will be able to visit with the Mayan families. We may also visit the church and museum. Then we continue to Cotzal, where we will visit the historic center. In the afternoon we return to Huehuetenango.
