This route is a part of an inactive volcanic dome with pine and cypress trees growing from the dry lava. The Candeleria peak is an excellent spot to take in the view of the Quetzaltenango Valley. Take the chance to walk on dry lava!

This is one of the best hikes you can experience. On this hike you will get a great view of the crater, the incredible eruptions, and live the adrenaline adventure with us. Recommended only for experienced trekkers.

The trip starts early in the morning where we take private transport to the ascent to begin the hike. We finish the descent in one day arriving back in Xela in the early evening! Breakfast and Lunchbox included!

Difficulty: MODERATE (the hike is moderate because we do not bring heavy bags)

The day begins at the Cumbre Alaska, the highest pass in Guatemala. On a clear day, you can see a total of 12 volcanoes! The hike starts in Alaska where we will walk into the cloud forest around the Volcano Zunil, a protected area with more Quetzals (Guatemala`s national bird) to be found than in the actual biotope of Quetzal. We will end the hike in the Natural Volcanic hotsprings of Feuntes Georginas where you can take a nice relaxing bath before returning to Quetzaltenango. This 7 to 8 hour walk is mostly downhill! There is a restaurant in Fuentes Georginas where you can get food and drinks.
