Ardren, Traci (2005). Ixchel and the invention of a modern pop godess

Mending the past: Ix Chel and the invention of a modern pop goddess Traci Ardren

For modern communities, she is the moon goddess and protectress of Maya culture and women; for scholars she is one of a number of deities with different roles in the Postclassic period. Which is the real Ixchel? The author excavates the story of the Maya goddess and her re-invention by myth-makers – including archaeologists. Keywords: Maya, Postclassic, religion, symbolic archaeology, post-modern archaeology, feminism Introduction Archaeologists have begun to examine the ways in which knowledge about the ancient past is consumed and appropriated. The Postclassic period supernatural patron of weaving known today as Ixchel, the Maya Moon Goddess, has become a common image in both modern marketing and cultural revitalisation movements within the greater Maya area. A simple search for ‘Ixchel’ on Google or any other search engine produces almost 50000 instantaneous results for everything from resorts to language schools to feminist retreat centres. How has this relatively obscure deity from the Maya ethnohistoric literature penetrated so deeply into modern popular consciousness?

Cultural Memory and Ear Civilization

Now available to an English-speaking audience, this book presents a groundbreaking theoretical analysis of memory identity, and culture. It investigates how cultures remember, arguing that human memory exists and is communicated in two ways, namely interhuman interaction and in external systems of notation such as writing, which can span generations. Dr. Assmann defines two theoretical concepts of cultural memory differentiating benveen the long-term memory of societies, which can span up to 3,ooo years, and communicative memory which is tlpically restricted to 8o-roo years

FACADES OF ANTIGUA , a guided tour to church fronts with the life of saints

fachada

SAINTS and facades of Antigua, a guided tour to church fronts

A guided tour explaining the life of saints , symbols and attributes. Some of the saints come from the bible, others from church history. Images are not placed arbitrarily but are selected to tell a real story! Do you want to know the story?

Pedro Nolasco standing high in the façade of the La Merced church.

Why? The Virgin Mary somewhere very visible and centrally located in the front section of the old cathedral with the still not born son and talking about not born... Do you know who NONNATUS is? Also to be found in a church in Antigua! Strange enough St. Peter and St. Paul are nearly always companions next to the main entrance of any church … and the same can be said from St. Domingo and St.Fransisco. Do you want to see a real angel, get yourself to Santa Clara church and Convent.

Somewhere the beloved Pedro Betancourt, now a Saint, can also be found. Not too difficult to know if you remember to which order he belongs. From archangels to apostles, from founders of religious orders to martyrs and preachers. You can know Antigua in a very different way!

This tour gives you input in the life of many saints, but not limited to them. You will walk through ruins and know more about colonial architecture as well. In other words, a real cultural experience.
