Chichicastenango

Surrounded by valleys, with mountains serrating the horizons, Chichicastenango seems to be isolated from time and space and the rest of Guatemala. When its narrow cobbled streets and red-tiled roofs are enveloped in mist, it seems magical. On the Thursday and Sunday market local craftsmen from the entire region come to this town to sell their goods. Shamanistic and ceremonials can be found here as well. Apart from the market you can visit the cathedral, museum Rossbach, a mask factory and Pascual Abaj. During the Sunday market you also have a good chance to see the cofradias (Mayan religious brotherhoods) who often hold precessions in and around the church of Santo Tomás on Sunday

Full day tour to Todos Santos los Cuchumatanes and the Chiantla town. This is a fantastic ride trough the Cuchumatanes mountains to visit the remote village of Todos Santos (See also special market tours)
If you are interested in contemporary but traditional Mayan life and dramatic mountain scenery, put the small town of Todos Santos Cuchumatán, 24, 85 miles or 40 km northwest of Huehuetenango, on your itinerary.
Todos Santos lies in the bottom of a deep valley, and the last 1¼ hours of approach by bus are down a bone-shaking dirt road that leaves the paved Huehuetenango – Soloma road after a 1½ hour climb up from Huehuetenango.
