We will start this day picking you up in your hotel, house, family etc. From here, we will come together at the beginning point of the hike. From Xela, we go to Cantel, one of the municipalities of Quetzaltenango, at an altitude about 2350 meters. Here the adventure starts. We have 3 hours of uphill hiking to go, until we reach the highest point in the hike (2950m). Here we can have our breakfast and enjoy one of the most beautiful views (in the summer and the rainy season). We can see the lake and a lot of volcanoes (San Pedro volcano in San Pedro la Laguna, Atitlán volcano, Toliman, Fuego, Acatenango, Agua, Santa Maria, Cerro Quemado, Tajumulco, Tacana) and many more. After this stop we have a difficult and slippery ascent, this will take about 2 ½ hours. At the end we come on a dirt road which we will
Day 2
When we slept this night before the Nahualate River, we´re going to have a difficult day today. We start with breakfast at 6.30am, so we can start hiking at 7.30am. We will descent for 2 ½ hours in woody surroundings, with pine trees and coffee farms. The last part of this descent is the most difficult (30 minutes of very slippery route), and finally we will come to the Nahualate river at 1400 meters altitude. Hereafter, we will have a difficult ascent for 30 minutes, and we continue ascending on easier parts for 3 hours, to reach an altitude of 2100 meters. In this place we can prepare and have our lunch, and after this, we are heading to Santa Clara la Laguna. This part will take about 1 ½ hours. This village is the place where we will sleep tonight, in the house of an indigenous Quiché family.
Note: When we did our first overnight stay in the second point, behind the Nahualate river, we can have our lunch in Santa Clara la Laguna, and this day will be with less hiking.
